Paralympic Games – 200 days to Go

Paralympic athletes from all over the world are putting the final touches to their training in preparation for the start of the Paralympic Games. The opening ceremony is on Wednesday the 29th August.  The UK has a strong link to the Paralympic Games. In 1948, Dr Ludwig Guttmann organised a wheelchair archery competition at Stoke Mandeville hospital for World War II soldiers with spinal cord injuries.

The competition took place between sports clubs and other hospitals on the same day as the Opening Ceremony of the London 1948 Olympic Games.

Four years later, as more sports were added, athletes from Holland joined in and the international Paralympic Movement was born.  There are many athletes with disabilities and if every type of disability was catered for at the Games it would take 3 months to complete.  For that reason the sports at each Paralympic games varies to give more athletes the chance to participate.

The Egyptian Paralympic Committee has confirmed it will be using Pre-Games Training Camps in Lincolnshire for a one-week Performance Camp prior to the 2012 Paralympic Games in August next year.  The Egyptian Paralympic Team will arrive in Lincolnshire on 21st August 2012. During their stay, the team will be training for Athletics, Table Tennis, Weight Lifting and Sitting Volleyball.

There are a number of Lincolnshire athletes taking part such as  Kieran Tscherniawsky.  Kieran is a GB Seated Discuss athlete and in 2011was voted Lincolnshire Disabled Sportsperson of the Year.  In a recent interview with Lincolnshire Sports Partnership he said

To have a possible chance of going to the Paralympics is something I have always dreamed of and worked for.  It means a lot of hard work but I love to be in the gym in the winter months and I love to be throwing. This means the world to me, being disabled has not stopped me getting to become an elite athlete, now I want to get to the top. To win at the Paralympics is my aim and to be selected is a great achievement, one step at a time!”

Good luck to everyone who is attempting to be there in 2012
